What are The Symptoms of Hellp Syndrome?

HELLP syndrome is a rare but serious pregnancy condition, usually appearing in the third

trimester or shortly after delivery. Related to preeclampsia but distinct from it, HELLP affects the

liver and blood cells. The name stands for:

● H: Hemolysis (breakdown of red blood cells),

● EL: Elevated Liver enzymes (indicating liver stress),

● LP: Low Platelet count (increasing bleeding risks).

Early recognition of HELLP symptoms, like upper abdominal pain, headache, blurred vision, and

swelling, is crucial, as it can lead to serious complications for both parent and baby

Main Symptoms of HELLP Syndrome

The symptoms of HELLP syndrome often overlap with those of preeclampsia, which is why it

can sometimes be difficult to diagnose. Here’s a look at some of the most common signs and

how they may affect you:

1. Abdominal Pain (Upper Right Side)

A common symptom of HELLP syndrome is pain in the upper right side of the abdomen, near

the liver, often felt under the ribs. This pain may be a sharp ache or constant pressure that does

not go away and can become more uncomfortable over time. It is often mistaken for digestive

issues, but if it feels unusually intense or persistent, it is important to let a healthcare provider

know, as it could be a sign of HELLP syndrome.

2. Headache

Frequent headaches are another common sign of HELLP syndrome, similar to preeclampsia.

These headaches may feel more intense or constant than regular headaches and often do not

go away with rest or hydration. Some people describe the pain as a pounding or throbbing

sensation that can be hard to ignore. While headaches can be common in pregnancy, one that

feels severe or lasts a long time should be checked by a healthcare provider.

3. Blurred Vision

Vision changes, like blurriness, sensitivity to light, or seeing spots or flashes, can also signal

HELLP syndrome. These changes can happen suddenly and make it hard to see clearly. Some

people may even experience brief moments of vision loss. Since blurred vision can be a sign of

many health issues, it is important to let a doctor know if you experience it, especially if it occurs

with other symptoms like headaches or abdominal pain.

4. Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting can occur with HELLP syndrome, and they are often mistaken for typical

pregnancy symptoms. However, when combined with other symptoms of HELLP syndrome, like

pain and fatigue, they may signal something more serious. If you start feeling nauseated or

vomit frequently without a clear cause, especially if it is paired with upper abdominal pain, it is

worth discussing with your provider.

5. Extreme Fatigue
People with HELLP syndrome often feel extremely tired, more so than the usual fatigue
experienced in pregnancy. This exhaustion may come on suddenly and feel overwhelming. It
can be difficult to get out of bed or complete everyday tasks. Fatigue alone is not uncommon in
pregnancy, but combined with other symptoms, it can be a sign of HELLP syndrome.

6. Edema (Swelling) and Rapid Weight Gain
Swelling, especially in the hands, feet, and face, can be a symptom of HELLP syndrome. This is
known as edema and can lead to sudden weight gain due to fluid buildup. Swelling is common
in pregnancy, but if it happens quickly or in combination with other signs like headaches, blurred
vision, or abdominal pain, it may indicate HELLP.

7. Pain with Deep Breaths
Some people with HELLP syndrome report feeling pain or discomfort when they take a deep
breath. This can feel like pressure or soreness around the ribs. Although this is not as common
as other symptoms, it is still a sign to watch for, especially if it occurs alongside other symptoms.

Less Common but Serious Symptoms
In rare cases, HELLP syndrome can cause severe symptoms that need immediate medical
attention. These include:
● Nosebleeds or Easy Bleeding: Because of the low platelet count, people with HELLP
syndrome may experience frequent nosebleeds or find that they bruise easily. Blood may
not clot properly, leading to heavier or longer bleeding times.
● Seizures or Uncontrollable Body Shakes: In some cases, HELLP syndrome can
cause seizures. This usually happens when HELLP is paired with preeclampsia, leading
to a condition called eclampsia
